UST
and AST Related Investigation and Cleanups:
H&A provided environmental and hydrogeological
services for the investigation and cleanup of an abandoned and
bankrupt Truckstop that operated since the late 1940’s.
Years of gasoline/diesel spills and neglect created a large
area of groundwater and soil contamination across the 13 acre
site. Under contract with the bankruptcy trustee and funding
through the California UST Cleanup Fund, H&A was able to
remove several UST’s and cleanup several thousand cubic
yards of contaminated soil onsite through the process of landfarming.
Numerous groundwater monitoring wells were installed onsite
and off-site on the surrounding properties to monitor the extensive
diesel and gasoline contamination. Through investigation and
remediation actions funded through the UST Cleanup Fund, closure
for the areas impacted by UST related contamination was granted,
however no funding source was available to address contamination
related to the site AST’s.
Chlorinated
Solvent Investigations
The California Cleanup and Abatement
Account (CAA) provided additional funds to address a regional
groundwater contamination issue related to chlorinated solvents
suspected of originating from the site. Several private domestic
water supply wells continually contained low levels of TCE and
c-1,2-DCE at concentrations that may pose a long-term health
risk to residents. H&A worked closely with the RWQCB and the
City of Corning (CAA fund Administrator) to develop a strategic
plan to confirm/refute a contaminant source located on the site.
Investigative services included the preparation of workplans
and reports: onsite investigations included subsurface geophysical
surveys, historical aerial photography reviews, topographic
surveys, soil gas sampling surveys and analyses, extensive continuous
coring and hydrogeological studies, monitoring
well installations, soil sampling, chemical analyses, smoke
tracer testing of pipelines, and interviews of key personnel
with knowledge of site operations. Through these investigations,
potential source areas have been
identified and recommendations for remedial action have been
addressed. Based on the findings the City of Corning and Tehama
County Development Group have been able to attract potential
buyers to develop the property and thus restore a blighted property
to usefulness. |
